CBN (cannabinol) is one of the many lesser-known cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It was one of the first cannabinoids identified by scientists. CBN has numerous therapeutic benefits, and unlike THC, it is non-intoxicating. If you’ve heard about CBN but did not know much about its many benefits, hopefully this blog will help.
What Is CBN?
The cannabis plant is known to contain hundreds of compounds that are collectively called cannabinoids. This specific compound occurs naturally when the cannabis plant ages, and CBN was first isolated in its pure form in 1896. It was earlier thought to be responsible for the cannabis high, but later, THC was discovered and found to be the cannabinoid known for the intoxicating effect.
How Does CBN Form?
Scientists discovered that when THC is exposed to light and heated, it slowly turns into CBN. Similarly, leaving cannabis left unrefrigerated gives higher levels of CBN. As the cannabis plant is left cut and stored, it oxidizes and converts into CBN.
CBN levels are determined by environmental factors and not genetic factors. THC-A, the acid form of THC, is converted into CBN-A when exposed to the air for a long time. THC loses its hydrogen molecules and undergoes oxidization leaving you with an acid form of CBN. This is then treated with UV light and heat and converted into CBN. This CBN binds to the CB2 receptors but only with one-tenth of the strength of THC.
How Does CBN Help?
CBN offers a wide range of benefits to the mind and body. It interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate a range of functions, including regulating the mind, pain perception, and cognitive functions. Here are some of the other benefits of CBN:
1.Better Sleep
CBN is an effective sleep aid. Research in mice has shown that CBN helps prolong sleep. This is probably attributed to the entourage effect, which is a phenomenon where cannabinoids work synergistically with one another and other cannabis compounds like terpenes and flavonoids to create a more potent effect. Hemp gummies for sleep relax the body and ensure deep sleep.
2. Anti-Inflammatory Properties
A recent study on rats found that CBN helps reduce arthritic pain and can be a potent aid for rheumatoid arthritis.
3. Fights Glaucoma
Another study on rabbits found CBN helps reduce intraocular pressure, thereby helping those suffering from glaucoma. Of course, it is not a replacement for traditional medications, and more research on humans is required to prove its effectiveness in treating glaucoma.
